Storm Summary and Projection:
Hurricane Summary POSTED: August 30, 2015 2:59 p.m. Tropical Storm Fred Eyes Cape Verde Islands, Heavy Rain from Erika Over Florida Tropical Storm Fred is located about 190 miles away from the Cape Verde Islands this afternoon. Fred will strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane during the next 24 hours as it tracks closer to the islands. Rough surf and dangerous rip currents will develop ahead of Fred today followed by increasing wind and rain late tonight and Monday. The greatest impacts will occur tomorrow and tomorrow night with heavy rain that can lead to deadly flash flooding and mudslides, and strong winds causing damage to trees and power lines. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Cape Verde Islands. Drier air and stronger wind shear is located just north of the Cape Verde Islands and eventually, these environmental conditions will have a negative impact on the tropical cyclone, but probably not until Tuesday. It's not out of the question that this tropical cyclone could bring hurricane conditions to the Cape Verde Islands. Meanwhile, Tropical Rainstorm Erika will track into the eastern Gulf today. The system will be interacting with an upper-level trough of low pressure over the eastern Gulf pushing flooding rain northward across the Florida Peninsula today through tomorrow. Rain from Erika will spread from south to north today bringing flooding downpours, especially to the western half of the peninsula. Tropical Rainstorm Erika should track north along and just off the west coast of Florida tomorrow and on Tuesday. This should spread heavy rain to the north into Georgia and South Carolina. A tropical wave east of the Lesser Antilles shows no signs of strengthening, but it will produce showers over the Windward Islands later today.
